If you’ve been on the job hunt recently, you already know the market is tough. But a disturbing new trend is making it even harder: the "ghost" interview.
Recent reporting from RNZ highlighted the story of Charlie Maclean, a job seeker who prepared for and completed an AI-led video interview, only to be abruptly ghosted. After some digging, she discovered a worrying possibility—the job she applied for may never have existed. Instead, the company appeared to be posting phantom roles just to lure in candidates and harvest their interview responses to train artificial intelligence models.
At TalentOS, we are building the future of hiring by combining powerful technology with real human connection. But stories like this serve as a stark reminder of what happens when technology is used to exploit, rather than empower, the workforce.
Here is why "ghost" jobs and deceptive AI interviews are dangerous—and how we can build a better ecosystem for talent.
The Real Cost of Phantom Jobs
In a ghost interview, the candidate sits across from an AI agent that asks questions and rigidly times their responses. As Maclean noted, the AI doesn't pause for thought; it simply cuts the candidate off mid-sentence and moves on.
But the jarring user experience is only half the problem. The real issue is data extraction.
Experts note that in the AI arms race, "data is king." Training conversational AI requires massive amounts of human dialogue. Tricking eager job seekers into providing that data under the false pretense of employment is a massive breach of candidate trust. It wastes people's time, creates false hope, and introduces severe privacy and ethical concerns about how personal data is stored and utilized.
AI Should Assist, Not Exploit
At TalentOS, we believe that hiring should be smarter, faster, and built for scale. Artificial intelligence has a massive role to play in that future—but only if it is deployed ethically.
When HR tech is built correctly, AI acts as a teammate. It should:
- Remove administrative friction so recruiters can spend more time talking directly to candidates.
- Surface real skills and verify talent so the right people get matched with the right opportunities.
- Operate with complete transparency, giving candidates clear insight into how their data is being used and evaluated.
Technology should never replace the basic human dignity of a genuine professional connection, and it certainly shouldn't be used as a Trojan horse for data harvesting.
Restoring Trust in the Hiring Process
Maclean’s experience has prompted her to launch a petition to Parliament to explicitly ban fake job advertisements used for data collection. Whether or not legislation catches up quickly, the recruitment industry needs to police itself now.
To employers and hiring teams: Your employer brand is only as strong as your candidate experience. Treating applicants as free data nodes will inevitably lead to public backlash and destroy your ability to attract top talent when you actually need it.
To job seekers: Protect your time and data. If a company relies entirely on a faceless AI bot for its first round of interviews—especially if the role seems too good to be true—do your research before clicking "record."
At TalentOS, our mission is to make hiring efficient, data-driven, and transparent. We are committed to a recruitment ecosystem where every job posted is real, every skill evaluated matters, and every candidate is treated with the respect they deserve.
